The director of an Austrian sugar refinery invented sugar cubes in the 19th century. Prior to this invention, sugar was available in the form of sugar loaves, whose weight of up to 150 kilograms was particularly cumbersome. The new and more practical type of sugar quickly spread beyond the country’s borders and also established itself in other regions. Sugar cubes were prevalent until the 1990s and represented the most common form in which sugar was offered. Although alternatives have meanwhile replaced this type of sugar in many areas, it is still in use to this day.
